There’s a lot going on in Camden, and we have a lot to catch up about. When I have some time, there’s the Norcross interview, the Paymon resignation, some reflections from last week’s Fair Housing conference and more. But it’s also the heart of the semester, and both Jared and I are struggling to find the time for some of our longer form work. So this week we’re going to do one of the things we love best at the Local Knowledge Blog — highlight some of the small business gems in the city around us. We’ll share reviews, events and more as the week goes on. Feel free to drop your own favorites in the comments!

Today, I want to chat a bit about La Unique Book Store. Phaedra Trethan highlighted La Unique back in November, and I’ve been spending more and more time there over the past few months ever since I met Larry Miles at the Camden Juneteenth event over the summer. Later in the week I’ll share an event they’re planning, and a few more reviews of the store, but today I wanted to share a bit about the type of material that can be found there.

This morning I picked up Nnedi Okorafor’s latest Binti: the Night Masquerade — along with the first two books of the trilogy. Those first two I’ve already listened too (they’re available via the Hoopla app for free through the Camden County Library system), but I liked them so much I wanted to have my own copies so I could share them with family and friends.
For those of you who, like me, are longing for a bit more Wakanda in your life after Black Panther, I highly recommend Binti. The author is a Black Panther graphic novelist, and the series has some similar underpinnings. It, like Black Panther, focuses on a futuristic black society with a community that thrives producing advanced technology. And like Black Panther, the series is well-researched and draws from African and African-American roots.

I’ve loved it. And I know they have a few more copies over at La Unique (on 6th street between Cooper and Market) if you’re interested!
