I’m really excited to share this event with everyone: the launching of April Saul’s Camden NJ: A Spirit Invincible exhibit at Swarthmore. I’ve been following April’s work for quite some time — she manages to capture the stunning beauty and the heartbreaking challenges of Camden in a way that I truly respect and admire. Here’s a link to her Facebook page, and I’ll include the details for her exhibit below:
What: A photography exhibit by April Saul at the List Gallery at Swarthmore College
When: March 2nd-April 3rd,
Events with an opening lecture by April Saul at 4:30pm at the Lang Performing Arts Center, closing book signing on April 3rd (not 2nd as on flier)
Here are April’s words on the project:
I came to Camden as a photojournalist…even though the city has awakened every activist molecule in me recently! I feel silly announcing this photo exhibit because I know pictures can’t begin to solve the problems here. I hope at least they are powerful reminders, not just of the difficulties faced by Camden residents, but of the indomitable spirit that exists here, and the heart.
Someone making money off Camdens abject poverty? You don’t say?!
I’d really encourage you to visit April’s facebook page and become familiar with her work. I mean it when I say I’m impressed with what she’s dedicated to this city — both artistically (specifically seeking a grant to cover day-to-day life here, ultimately leaving her day job to continue covering the city) and personally (getting involved in anti-violence initiatives and looking to buy a house here). I certainly look up to her.
