Tired of wonkery? The endless debate over Renaissance schools? The relentless PR campaign of the do-gooders? So are we. That’s why we save our favorite series blog series for #FoodieFriday.
Another week, another article (and map!) talking about Camden’s food. It was great to meet Alex at our last Supper Club, and even better to see him produce this wonderful article on Camden’s foodie scene. Here’s how Alex introduces his foodie readers to the city:
Delaware Avenue has become a hotbed for selfies and panoramas. With the addition of Race Street Pier, Morgan’s Pier, Spruce Street Harbor Park, Blue Cross River Rink, and La Peg, we’ve seen more pictures of the Ben Franklin Bridge and Delaware River show up on newsfeeds than ever before. But if all of those people with their phones in the air look out just a little bit further, they’ll see Camden, N.J. And more often than not, they’ll look away. Nothing to see there.
Eater Philly just dropped its first ever map of dining in Camden, New Jersey. In fact, it might be the first mainstream guide to eating in Camden, maybe, ever. Which makes sense, given that the only time the city gets mentioned is when a big-time musician rolls into town, or a website releases their latest Top 10 of crime-ridden cities in the country. Just two years ago, Rolling Stone magazine wrote about the hopelessly desperate, apocalyptic city, and it scared the living bejesus out of Philadelphia.
But for those of you with an appetite for the future, know this: most media is written to sell, and people love the sight of something ruined. But Camden is amidst a lot of change, and at the very center of it, as per usual, is a bustling food scene. Because Camden has to eat too, and boy, do they eat well.
Please, go read the whole thing.
Maybe my favorite part of this whole thing is the unbelievable quote by Joseph Russell at the end of the article:
“People have all these grand ideas for this city. ‘We’re going to build this!’ ‘We’ll bring people here for that!’ And I’m sitting here thinking, or we can eat right over there, right now.”
And that’s really it for me. We can eat here, right now is my official motto.
