While I was watching the Camden Christmas Parade, a few of the players from the Camden High Varsity Men’s Basketball team asked me if I was interested in buying chocolates to support the team. I bought a few, something I almost inevitably do, remembering my own days of selling chocolates, or even collecting money at busy intersections to make sure my teams could pay for trips to tournaments (it occurs to me now, that these two young gentlemen might have noticed my height and not have been from the team. If so, kudos young men. You are fine entrepreneurs).

I also went home and looked up the Camden High schedule. This got me thinking – what else is going on in Camden that I, as a professor here, would rarely run across without someone inviting me?

So I’ve spent the last few days trying to figure out some ways to incorporate more of these things into my life. That started with Camden High hoops, but I was also introduced to a coach at Rutgers-Camden, so I’ll probably check out a game there as well. I’ve been trying to get my hands on the activities schedule at the North Camden Community Center, and researching different boxing options along with other programs. And, of course, there are the Waterfront South Theatre and the new firehouse which will be a writing center.

But I also want to invite you (students! Faculty! Readership!) to look into some of these things. And if you do manage to attend, I’d love to have you post here about what is going on. There’s so much civic life here in Camden that I’m only starting to be invited to.
